About

Hi!

Thanks for stopping by my corner of the internet. ✨

My name is A. J. Higgins, and I’m a composer and singer-songwriter. I study music composition at Cedarville University. I strive to make Christ-centered music, or in other words, mesmerizing melodies and profound pieces for the praise of Christ. My compositional inspiration comes from composers such as Akira Senju, J. S. Bach, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Jennifer Higdon, Takashi Yoshimatsu, and Akira Miyagawa.

Some of my most recent compositions include:

▶️“Elegy for the Beloved”, for xiao and piano (2023)
▶️ “Come, for thy wasted day is closing”, an SATB motet (2023).

I’m engaged in the study of music theory, counterpoint, and historically-informed composition, with the aim of writing beautiful pieces using a variety of compositional techniques from all eras. My compositional journey started as a child, writing small songs on the ukulele. Along with composition, I also write poetry, and my poems have been published in the Virginia Writers Club Teen Nib and in the Virginia Writers Club journal. As a poet and hymnwriter, I plan to blend both the musical and literary arts as a church musician.

I am also a vocalist, singing in both the Cedarville University Concert Chorale and the CU Madrigal Choir. As a young child, I would often sing at nursing homes and senior citizen centers. I have also sang at churches and in church worship bands.

Some assorted trivia about me:

☕ I love to drink teas of all sorts (Earl Grey and Matcha are my current favorites).

📗 Some of my favorite authors include C. S. Lewis, L. M. Montgomery, Chuck Black, Douglas Bond, and L. Frank Baum.

📻 I’m a lover of audio drama.

🍦 If I’m not composing or writing, I’ll be serving food and ice-cream at the local Dairy Queen, providing a hospitable environment and quick service!

This blog will document my musical exploits, and if this interests you, I hope you will stick around!
