O, Sing the Mighty Kingdom

O, Sing the Mighty Kingdom
By Antonio J. Higgins
Based on Isa. 9:7, Jo. 18:36, 1. Cor 3:16, and Heb. 10:4 .

O, sing the mighty kingdom!
Advance it now today!
His truth, ere mortal wisdom,
Had seen the light of day,
Has beckoned every nation,
To glorious salvation!
He is the Lord of lords,
And Word above all words.

What kingdom never ceases?
Our God’s own kingdom true!
And still today increases
For Heaven’s harvest view:
His rule is never ending!
And all His saints defending
From satan’s furious rage
Against the kingdom age.

No temple can be worthy,
Except the heart of man!
Not made of stones, nor earthly
Designs of human plan.
His church is ever glorious,
Against the world, victorious!
For Christ the crucified,
On us, His blood applied.

His sacrifice is greater,
His very blood was spilled
None other could be better,
For Christ has canceled guilt!
His reign is here forever,
His kingdom ceases never!
All faithful, join and sing
Of Jesus Christ, the King!’

🎼 Notes on the hymn:

Isaiah 9 is a chapter mostly read during the Christmas season, because of the all familiar verse 6, “Unto us a child is born.” But Isaiah doesn’t end his proclamation at that! He goes on in verse 7: “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

“Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.” How often do we forget in this fallen world this promise about the church? Throughout world history, this promise has been kept! His reign is not an earthly reign like kings and tyrants, and will never end. It will always see its increase. It is not seen by a temple made of stone, as Jesus said that the Jerusalem temple would be destroyed (Luke 21:5-6). Jesus said to Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36).

So what is God’s kingdom? Peter tells us in 1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

The body of the universal church is the kingdom called out of the world to be a light to the world. We are the royal priesthood, and our Great High Priest is Jesus (Heb. 7:17)! We do not have to sacrifice  “bulls and goats” anymore, for the sacrifice of the Old Covenant “cannot take away sins” (Heb 10: 4)!

We can be satisfied in the eternal New Covenant, for it does what the Old could never do, wipe away sin. What a glorious King we have that died in our place so that we could have our sins forgiven. Sing on, Christians, and proclaim the New Covenant Kingdom of Christ! “He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this” (Isaiah 9:7).
